Lip filler is hyaluronic acid — a gel made from a sugar your body already produces — placed into and around the lip to restore or create shape. The products designed for lips are softer and more flexible than those used for cheeks or jaw, because the lip is constantly moving and a firm structural gel would feel and look wrong there.
The mistake almost everyone makes, patients and injectors alike, is thinking of lip filler as volume. Volume is the least interesting thing it does. What actually changes how a mouth reads is proportion — the ratio of upper lip to lower, the definition of the vermillion border, the shape of the cupid's bow, how much upper lip shows at rest, and whether the corners turn up or down.
Get the proportion right and a quarter of a syringe can transform a mouth. Get it wrong and a full syringe just makes the same imbalance bigger.

Lips are the most requested and most frequently overdone treatment in aesthetics. The sequence below is what stops that happening.

Proportion is assessed at rest
Upper-to-lower ratio, border definition, cupid's bow, corner position, tooth show and how the lip sits against the chin and nose. Almost everything we decide comes from this, not from the size of the lip.

Product is matched to the lip
Softer, more flexible gels for a mobile, expressive lip. Slightly firmer for a lip that needs structural support at the border. Using a cheek filler in a lip is how you get a stiff, sausage-shaped result.

Micro-droplet placement
Small deposits placed within the lip body and along the border in the correct plane. Superficial placement near the border is the single biggest cause of the filler shelf people notice above the lip.

You look partway through
We stop and hand you a mirror while there is still product left. Lip filler is a conversation, and the decision to add more should be yours before the syringe is empty rather than after.

Reviewed at two weeks
Lips swell dramatically for two to three days and settle over two weeks. Judging the result before then is meaningless. We add at the review if it needs it — nothing can be taken back on day one.

Migration is filler moving out of the lip body and settling above the vermillion border, creating a subtle ledge or a shadowed roll that reads as puffiness rather than fullness. It is the single most common problem we correct from other clinics, and once you have seen it you cannot unsee it. It happens from placing product too superficially, injecting too close to or across the border, over-filling a lip that has nowhere left to expand, and repeatedly topping up before the previous filler has cleared. All four are avoidable. If you already have it, dissolving is straightforward and we can rebuild once the tissue has settled.

They solve
different problems
A lip flip is four to six units of neuromodulator at the upper lip border. It relaxes the muscle that curls the lip inward, so the lip rolls gently outward and shows more — without adding a single millilitre of volume. It suits people whose lips disappear when they smile, or who want more upper-lip show without becoming fuller. It lasts around three months and costs considerably less than a syringe. Filler adds actual volume and structure and lasts six to twelve months. If you want more lip, that is filler. If you want more visible lip, that may well be a flip — and it is the cheaper answer, which is precisely why fewer clinics suggest it.

Lip injections can reactivate herpes simplex in anyone who carries it, and a great many people do without realising. An outbreak after lip filler is uncomfortable, delays your result and occasionally affects healing. If you have ever had a cold sore, even once, years ago, tell us at consultation — we prescribe antiviral cover to start before your appointment and it very reliably prevents the problem. This is the single most useful thing you can disclose before a lip appointment.

Lip fillers differ in softness, flexibility, how much water they attract and how much they lift. A soft, low-swell gel gives hydration and gentle definition and behaves naturally in a mouth that moves constantly. A slightly firmer gel holds a defined border or supports a lip that has genuinely deflated. Using a firm structural filler designed for cheeks in a lip is how you get a stiff, immobile, sausage-like result — and it is more common than it should be. This is the question worth getting right before you book, because the cheaper answer is often the correct one. A lip flip adds visible lip without volume and costs a fraction of a syringe. Filler adds real volume and structure. Vertical lines above the lip need something different again. And if you already have filler you dislike, dissolving comes first.

How to prep & what day two looks like
Start about a week ahead
- Tell us if you have ever had a cold sore, even once and even years ago. We prescribe antiviral cover to start before your appointment.
- Allow at least three weeks before any event, ideally four. Day two lips do not photograph well.
- If medically appropriate and cleared by your physician, stop blood thinners, NSAIDs, fish oil, vitamin E and alcohol 48 hours beforehand.
- Avoid dental work for two weeks either side of your appointment.
- Reschedule if you have an active cold sore, infection or broken skin on the lips.
- Come with clean lips and no lipstick if possible.
- Let us know if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding — we will not treat you.
The first 72 hours
- Ice gently, 10 minutes on and 10 off, for the first 24 hours. Do not press hard.
- Sleep with your head elevated for two nights.
- Expect significant swelling at 24 to 72 hours. Your lips may look larger than what you agreed to. This is swelling, not the result.
- Do not massage or press the lips unless we have specifically shown you how.
- No strenuous exercise, sauna, steam or hot tub for 48 hours.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours and very hot or spicy food on day one.
- Small lumps and slight asymmetry in the first week are normal and usually settle. Do not judge the result before day 14.
- Call us immediately for blanching or white patches, escalating or disproportionate pain, dusky or mottled skin, or any vision change.

How much is lip filler?+
Lip filler is priced per syringe, generally $650 to $900 in Scottsdale. Most patients need one syringe or less, and at KORA there is no minimum — half a syringe is a perfectly normal treatment and you pay for what goes in.
How much does a lip flip cost?+
A lip flip is 4 to 6 units of Botox at $13 / unit, roughly $52 – $78. It gives more upper-lip show without adding volume and lasts about three months.

How long does lip filler last?+
Six to twelve months. Lips move constantly and metabolise filler faster than static areas such as the cheek or jaw, so they clear sooner than filler elsewhere on the face.
Recovery
How much swelling should I expect?+
A great deal, and more than anywhere else on the face. Swelling peaks at 24 to 72 hours and lips can look considerably larger than the result you agreed to. It settles over about a week, with the final shape at two weeks.
Does lip filler hurt?+
Lips are the most sensitive area we treat, but topical numbing for 15 to 20 minutes and lidocaine within the filler itself make it very manageable. Most patients describe pressure rather than sharp pain.
How soon before a wedding or event should I have lip filler?+
Three weeks minimum, four ideally. Swelling needs a full week to settle and you want a two-week review window in case anything needs refining before the day.
Results
Will my lips look fake?+
Not if proportion is assessed before volume, and not if we use the right amount. Most obviously done lips are the result of too much product, product in the wrong plane, or repeated top-ups before the previous filler cleared. We would rather use half a syringe well.
Lip filler or lip flip — which do I need?+
If you want more lip, that is filler. If you want more visible lip — particularly if your upper lip disappears when you smile — a lip flip may give you exactly that for a fraction of the cost, without any added volume. Many patients benefit from both.
What treats vertical lip lines or smoker's lines?+
A combination. A very soft filler placed superficially fills the lines, a few units of neuromodulator relaxes the muscle that creates them, and resurfacing such as microneedling improves the skin quality around them. Filler alone rarely does enough.
Concerns
What is lip filler migration?+
Filler moving out of the lip body and settling above the vermillion border, creating a subtle ledge or roll that reads as puffiness. It comes from superficial placement, injecting too close to the border, overfilling, or topping up too frequently. It is largely preventable and fully correctable with hyaluronidase.
Can lip filler be dissolved?+
Yes. Hyaluronidase breaks down hyaluronic acid within days. We dissolve our own work and other providers', with no judgement attached, and can rebuild once the tissue has settled at two to four weeks.
Safety
Can lip filler cause cold sores?+
It can reactivate herpes simplex in anyone who carries the virus, which is a great many people. If you have ever had a cold sore, tell us at consultation and we will prescribe antiviral cover to start before your appointment.
Who should not have lip filler?+
Anyone pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding; anyone with an active cold sore or infection at the site; anyone with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine; and anyone with certain autoimmune conditions. We screen for all of this.
