Juvéderm is not one product. It is a family of hyaluronic acid fillers made by Allergan, each engineered with different cross-linking, firmness, lift capacity and flexibility. That engineering is what determines where a gel belongs — and using the wrong one is behind a large share of the results people dislike.
A firm, high-lift gel like Voluma is built to sit on bone and project a cheek. A soft, low-swell gel like Volbella is built for a lip or the fine lines around it. Volux is the firmest of the family and the first hyaluronic acid filler FDA-approved specifically for jawline definition. Put Voluma in a lip and you get something stiff and immobile. Put Volbella on a cheekbone and it does almost nothing.
All of them contain lidocaine, all are reversible with hyaluronidase, and all last differently — from around a year in the lips to up to two years in the cheek and jaw, because mobile tissue clears filler faster than static tissue does.

The compartment is identified
Facial fat sits in discrete compartments that deflate at different rates. We work out which one has actually lost volume — the visible problem is frequently a plane or two away from where you would point.

Lift requirement is assessed
Deep structural support on bone needs a firm, high-lift gel. Superficial work in mobile tissue needs a soft, flexible one. This single decision determines which formulation is correct.

Movement is accounted for
A jaw and a lip move constantly; a temple barely moves at all. Gels that hold their shape against movement belong in the jaw. Gels that flex belong in the lip. Reversing that is how faces end up looking stiff.

Placement, cannula or needle
A blunt cannula pushes vessels aside rather than piercing them and is used in the temples, midface and tear trough. A needle gives precision on bone and at the lip border. That choice is anatomical, not habitual.

Skinvive is routinely misunderstood, including by patients who book it expecting volume. It is micro-droplets of hyaluronic acid placed intradermally — into the skin itself rather than beneath it — to improve smoothness, hydration and how the cheek reflects light. It adds no structure and lifts nothing. FDA-approved in 2023, it lasts around six months and suits patients whose skin quality is the concern rather than their facial volume. If you want your cheeks fuller, Skinvive is the wrong product and Voluma is the right one.

Every Juvéderm formulation is hyaluronic acid, which means every one can be dissolved with hyaluronidase within days. That reversibility is genuinely reassuring and it is also why hyaluronic acid dominates the market. It does not, however, make filler risk-free. The serious complication is vascular occlusion — product entering or compressing a vessel — which is rare, time-critical and managed with hyaluronidase by someone who recognises it immediately. We use blunt cannulas in the highest-risk areas, aspirate where a needle is used, and keep hyaluronidase on site at every appointment.

Patients are frequently told filler lasts a year, then find their lips have gone in eight months while their cheeks are still there after eighteen. Nothing has gone wrong. Hyaluronic acid is broken down faster in tissue that moves constantly and has a richer blood supply, and a lip moves thousands of times a day where a cheekbone barely moves at all. Formulation matters too — Voluma and Volux are more heavily cross-linked precisely so they resist breakdown in the areas where longevity is worth paying for. When you compare filler prices, compare cost per year rather than cost per syringe.

Juvéderm or something else?
Juvéderm and Restylane are both excellent hyaluronic acid families and the differences between them are smaller than marketing suggests — each has gels that behave slightly better in particular planes. Sculptra does a different job entirely, building your own collagen gradually. Botox does not add volume at all. The genuinely important decision is not which brand, but whether your problem is volume, collagen or movement.

How to prep & what to do after
Start about a week ahead
- Book at least four weeks before any event. Filler bruises more than neuromodulators and you want a review window before the date.
- If medically appropriate and cleared by your physician, stop blood thinners, NSAIDs, fish oil, vitamin E and alcohol 48 hours ahead.
- Tell us about every medication and supplement, and about any history of cold sores if lips are being treated — we may prescribe antiviral cover.
- Reschedule if you have an active skin infection, or a dental procedure within two weeks either side.
- Eat beforehand. Injections on an empty stomach are the most common cause of feeling light-headed.
- Come with a clean face if possible, and expect to be photographed for your record.
- Let us know if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding — we will not treat you.
The first 48 hours matter most
- Ice intermittently for the first 24 hours, 10 minutes on and 10 off. Sleep with your head elevated for two nights.
- Do not massage or press the area unless we have specifically shown you how.
- No strenuous exercise for 48 hours — raised blood pressure worsens swelling and bruising.
- Avoid heat for 48 hours: sauna, hot tub, hot yoga, sun beds.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours.
- Expect lumps and asymmetry in the first few days. This is swelling, not the result.
- No dental work or facials for two weeks.
- Call us IMMEDIATELY for blanching or white patches, escalating or disproportionate pain, dusky or mottled skin, or any vision change.

What is Juvéderm?+

Which Juvéderm is right for me?+
It depends entirely on the area. Voluma for cheeks, Volux for jawline, Vollure for nasolabial folds, Volbella for lips and fine perioral lines, Ultra for lip volume, and Skinvive for skin quality rather than volume. The choice is made at consultation from your anatomy.
How long does Juvéderm last?+
It varies by formulation and by how much the area moves. Volbella and Ultra in the lips last up to about a year; Vollure in the folds up to eighteen months; Voluma in the cheeks and Volux in the jawline up to two years.

Safety
Can Juvéderm be dissolved?+
Yes. Every formulation is hyaluronic acid and reverses with hyaluronidase within days. We dissolve our own work and other providers', and can rebuild once the tissue has settled.
Is Juvéderm safe?+
Hyaluronic acid fillers have a long safety record and are reversible. The serious risk is vascular occlusion, which is rare, time-critical and managed with hyaluronidase. We use blunt cannulas in the highest-risk areas and keep hyaluronidase on site at every appointment.
Who should not have Juvéderm?+
Anyone pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding; anyone with an active skin infection at the site; anyone with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine; and anyone with certain autoimmune conditions. We screen for all of this.
Results
Will Juvéderm make me look overfilled?+
Not if it is assessed properly. The overfilled look usually comes from product placed in the wrong plane, or from using filler to compensate for skin laxity rather than volume loss. We assess laxity separately and will tell you when filler is the wrong tool.
